Named after Memphis in Egypt, an ancient capital located on the Nile River, Memphis, Tennessee is a place where you can see and feel the Southern hospitality throughout every part of the city. This can be seen from the kind smiles of natives to the graciousness of receptionists at any of the five star hotels Memphis has to offer. When you visit, you get a sense of what many of the musical greats from the city, such as Muddy Waters, Isaac Hayes and Johnny Cash, felt and that's a sense of being at home.

Known as The River City and referred to as the "Mid-South", Memphis is a very large city. It has a population of over 650,000 residents making it the largest city within Tennessee. In addition to its strength in numbers, the city is a significant social capital in its contributions to the cultural identity of the Southern United States, also known as the South.

Memphis is famous for many reasons, one of which is for being the birthplace of several American music genres including rock and roll, gospel, blues and country music. In fact, many great musical talents got their start here during the 1950s, including Isaac Hayes, Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Muddy Waters and B.B. King. These musical greats went on to become legends in their genre with an impressive legacy.

Elvis Presley, for example, made his home here and when he passed away, his home became and still is a famous tourist attraction. Graceland, a 13.8-acre estate with white columns, houses much of Elvis Presley's memorabilia and artifacts. This includes his private planes and collections of motorcycles and automobiles in addition to his creativity weaved into every room. Although Elvis Presley has been gone for many years, Graceland and his legacy still live on. His home is only second to the White House in terms of visitors it attracts each year. Other great attractions include The National Civil Rights Museum, Brooks Museum of Art, The Pink Palace, the Children's Museum of Memphis and the Memphis Walk of Fame.

The city, although significant in its social history, is very unassuming. This is due in part to the Southern hospitality that radiates through the city. As you walk through the streets that greats such as Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis and Charlie Rich walked; there is a feeling of tranquility that only the South and Memphis can give you. For such a laid back city, it offers a profound sense of greatness without the arrogance. You can feel like you are a part of something important even as you visit places such as The Orpheum Theater, a movie palace from the 1920s or Sun Studio where the King of Rock and Roll first recorded "That's When Your Heartache Begins" and "My Happiness".

Even when you visit a restaurant, that same down home feeling still lingers and is even more apparent, although Southern cuisine is another area in which the city excels and it is something to boast about. Instead, you find some of the nicest and modest waiters and delicious food. A great example is the Flight Restaurant and Wine Bar. This restaurant is a wonderful place to go for a quiet dinner for two or for a fun dinner with a group. The restaurant gives you the ability to mix and match food and if you like, you can even sit outside and enjoy the food with the beautiful view of the city. The ambiance of the restaurant along with the entrees, appetizers and drinks are superb. Also, the staff is friendly and very accommodating. This same type of accommodating spirit is what you will also find at many of the five star hotels Memphis has on its list.

The Flight Restaurant and Wine Bar and the five star hotels Memphis makes available are not the only places where you will find such great Southern hospitality. When you go to almost any other place in the city or even to a major event such as Memphis in May, you don't feel like a visitor but are welcomed as part of the greater community. When you come to Memphis, besides the exceptional food, its intriguing history and friendly five star hotels Memphis supplies, you get an experience that will become part of your history.
